Abstract [en]

The purpose of this thesis is to investigate how preschool teachers use reading aloud as a tool for learning and whether the amount of multicultural children in a preschool setting affects the use of children’s literature with multicultural characters and themes. This has been investigated with the aid of three research questions which explores in what extent multicultural characters and themes are present in certain preschools children’s literature, which thoughts and standpoints have shaped the preschool teachers approach regarding work in this matter and what other purposes preschool teachers sees with reading aloud for the children. To explore these questions, we have used a combination of interviews and observations at two separate preschools, one with nearly exclusively multicultural children and the other with only a few. The results of this study showed that even though all four preschool teachers in question agreed on the value of making multicultural characters and themes visible through children’s literature, none of them worked actively with this at their respective preschools. The results also showed that both preschools had a low amount of multicultural characters in their respective children’s literature and multicultural themes were practically non-existent
