Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: The operating theatre nurse's role and responsibilities are somewhat unknown as perioperative nursing is no longer part of the nurse's basic education. Nowadays there is a shortage of operating theatre nurses and there is a need to attract more people to the profession in order to ensure patient safety in the operating room. More research is needed as there is no clear understanding or definition of the factors that motivate operating theatre nurses in their work and what contributes to job satisfaction. Purpose: The purpose of the study is to investigate what generates job satisfaction in operating theatre nurse’s profession. What are the positive experiences in their job? What represents an attractive workplace? Method: The study has a qualitative approach. Seven operation theatre nurses were interviewed in October 2017 with semi structured questions. The collected data was processed using qualitative content analysis methods. Findings: Operating theatre nurses find joy in many aspects of their job and describe several factors in the environment that makes the operation department an attractive workplace. A great deal of job satisfaction comes from relationships and cooperation with colleagues. Being creative and flexible and constantly learning new things are challenges that lead to development and competence. Conclusion: There are many positive aspects in operating theatre nurse’s job. Should these be given more prominence, there would be better opportunities to attract more people to the profession.
