Report from the eye of the storm : A qualitative study of SVT, Aftonbladet and TV4's crisis communication after the #metoo movement (English)
Abstract [en]

Since the hashtag movement #metoo reached Sweden the scandals have gone off one by one. Famous men have been accused of sexual harassment at some of the largest media companies in Sweden, and the organizations must now defend themselves in the eyes of a critical public, with effective crisis communication.

The purpose of this paper was to find out how three of the most distinguished media companies in Sweden commented on their crisis after the #metoo-movement, and what kind of argumentation and strategies these companies used to regain trust after the scandals. I used theories within feminism, sexual harassment at the workplace, crisis communication, company identity and image repair theory.

The method used was a rhetoric analysis - with concepts that I customized from rhetoric theory to fit defensive texts and apologias.

My results showed that the most common argument was that sexism is a problem everywhere, and therefore not just the workplace in question, and that ”corrective actions” and ”evading responsibility” was the most commonly used image repair strategies. I also found out that the executives in charge of the sexual harassment matters had the more logical texts, and used less patos-arguments: compared to the other half of the authors who were more emotional.
