Opportunities and difficulties : A study of how teachers’ perceive their ability to teach pupils with language impairments and create accessible learning environments (English)
Abstract [en]

Pupils with disabilities have the right to get their education tailored to their special needs to enable improvements in their continued studies and development. To succeed with this task, the teachers need adequate competence to be able to adapt their teaching to these pupils. The purpose of our study has been to examine four teachers’ level of perceived competence in teaching pupils with language impairments. Through in-depth interviews and eight observational studies of the teaching environments in two municipalities in northern Sweden, we have studied the teachers’ perceived competence in teaching these pupils. The results show that the teachers perceive their competence as limited and want more guidance and support to be able to include the pupils into the ordinary education. All teachers use supporting images as well as technical means to make the inclusion work. Even though these adjustments are somewhat time consuming, several teachers mention that they benefit all pupils.
