Abstract [en]

Abstract:

Title: The importance of preoperative information – The effects of preoperative information on pre- and postoperative anxiety and postoperative pain.

Background: Despite great success in the field of medicine the last few years, the need of surgical interventions as treatment is still high. A surgical intervention can induce pain and anxiety in patients. It can affect the state of health of the patient and bring on unnecessary suffering and longer postoperative recuperation.

Aim: Study the effect of preoperative information on pre- and postoperative anxiety and postoperative pain on patients undergoing a surgical intervention.

Method: A literature review of quantitative randomized studies on the subject was carried out. The search of articles was done on the databases CINAHL and PubMed. The articles were quality audited, analysed and collocated with inspiration of Friberg.

Results: Five out of ten articles included, discussed anxiety were all of them show a significant difference between intervention- and control group after information was given to the intervention group. Nine out of ten articles are about pain, were six of them can’t find a significant difference how pain differs between the groups.

Conclusion: To summarize, patients that has been given the preoperative information showed a lower anxiety level and to a certain degree a lower level of pain.
