Abstract [en]

This essay aims to examine how secondary teachers apply the derogation clause when grading students with dyslexia in the subject Swedish. In order to gain this knowledge, the essay examines teachers' familiarity with dyslexia and how they interpret the curriculum requirements in relation to dyslexia when assessing and grading. As the derogation clause only is applicable when additional adjustments are not enough for the student to reach a grade, it is also relevant to investigate the effects of these adjustments. This was examined through interviews with a qualitative approach where eight teachers participated. The theoretical starting points of this essay in terms of tools for analyzing the collected data are the perspectives of special education and the framework factor-theoretical model. The results show that all teachers know that dyslexia involves reading and writing difficulties of non-transitory nature. These specific difficulties give them the entitlement to use the derogation clause when grading the students. However, the result also indicate uncertainties and misunderstandings about how it should be interpreted and used as it was perceived as unclear and difficult to apply. Because the teachers were not familiar with the derogation clause, the conclusion could be drawn that students who should have benefited from this legal clause did not. My study shows however that the derogation clause was used correctly, as the teachers sought out guidance in the special education teacher or head master, before applying it.
