Reading interventions : A study on SEN teachers' work and views on early interventions concerning decoding and reading comprehension (English)
Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to investigate how schools identify children at the age of 7 to 9 with reading difficulties and what kind of assessment and screening material they use. The aim was also to examine what methods and interventions special education teachers use and consider to be effective to support these students in decoding and reading comprehension. Another aim in the study was also to find out the special education teachers thoughts on inclusion. Six special education teachers were interviewed regarding screening, early intervention in decoding, reading comprehension and inclusion. The result showed that the schools use the municipal screening plan with several assessments and screenings. The special education teachers then use a range of different interventions, mostly in decoding. Another conclusion is that not many of the informants use interventions in reading comprehension. Also that a longer period of intense reading is the intervention most special education teachers believe leads to good results. Most of these special education teachers consider that an inclusive education is a primary goal, but they also agree that some interventions benefit by an individual instruction.
