Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

AbstractIn this study, nurses' experiences of constant observation of patients with mental health illnessin inpatient psychiatric care are examined. We have chosen to use the tidal model by PhilBarker as a theoretical framework for the study. Background: Mental health issues is becoming more common while there are differentopinions about the effects of patient monitoring.Aim: The purpose of the study is to describe the nurses' experiences of constant observationduring the care of these patients.Method: To get a picture of how constant observation is experienced in psychiatric inpatientcare, we have interviewed nine nurses who have shared their experiences. The interviewswere transcribed through qualitative content analysis and the experiences expressed have beenanalyzed and sorted into categories.Result: There were three main categories: Difficulties in Building a Relationship, TheNecessities of Making Reprioritizations, and The Challenge of Addressing the Difficulties. Inthese categories, the experiences of the nurses show the relationship with the patient, toprioritize constant monitoring in relation to other tasks, and to deal with abuse or self-injuryattempts during the constant observation. Conclusion: The study shows that nurses find that constant observation provides time fordeveloping a relationship with the patient, which can improve the patient's condition and hisor her view on healthcare. However, it was also found that nurses experience that their skillsare wasted during the constant observation, as they can only devote themselves to one patient.Nurses in the study also found that constant observation could be difficult and that theywanted more information on how to handle different situations.
