Sports associations are losing members : A qualitative study of why adolescents leaves IFK Umeå (English)
Abstract [en]

The organized sport is an important player in society. Most of the Swedish people have been engaged in union sports, making it the second largest in the country, after trade unions. Therefore, it is worrying that sports associations are increasingly losing members. IFK Umeå is one of those who have lost many active athletes in recent years. The purpose of the report was to study, through interviews with previous members, the reasons why young people leave the club but also provide development proposals. The result is based on nine semistructured interviews. The result suggests that young people left the club when their motivation got worse because the coaches did not create an inclusive environment or pushed down the participants. Other causes such as a social context, both in connection with sport but also outside the sporting context had an influence on motivation. That the practitioners were given less opportunities to influence themselves when and how they practiced also played a part in the decision to leave. The results from the study were then discussed in relation to a theory of motivation by the name self-determination theory. The report's conclusions are that the club should listen more to the active athletes, create an inclusive environment, but also work with educating the coaches and leaders within the club.
