Abstract [en]

This thesis discusses regional identity, looking at policy documents through a critical discourse analysis inspired by Fairclough (2010). 12 texts connected to the project Creative Region of Gastronomy in the region of Jämtland are explored with concepts of identity and representation. The aim is to display the dominating discourse in policy documents, to find which food that are put forward as regional representatives and understand the influence on the regional identity. Recurring is that the cultural values are highlighted in policy documents, often on the premises of the economical values. This comes with a risk of excluding the small scale producers that is either not economically beneficial or not producing high class products from the process. Thus, more research is needed to further understand the consequences of policy documents on regional identity. The thesis is resulting in recommendations for future projects of regional development through local food production.
