Abstract [sv]

Denna studie undersöker utrikes födda kvinnors karriärvägar och etablering på den svenska arbetsmarknaden. Studien fokuserar på broar och barriärer som kvinnorna möter på arbetsmarknaden och hur dessa inverkar på yrkesval och karriärvägar. Empirin bygger intervjuer med tre högutbildade, utrikes födda kvinnor som alla har lyckats med att etablera sig på arbetsmarknaden i Sverige. Resultatet har analyserats utifrån tre olika karriärteorier: Careership-teorin, Social Cognitive Career Theory och Gottfredsons teori: The theory of Circumscription and Compromise. Resultatet visar att återetablering på en ny arbetsmarknad innebär en rad olika svårigheter och vilka svårigheter individerna möter och hur dessa hanteras beror på en rad olika faktorer såsom personliga egenskaper, stödet i omgivningen och utbildningsinriktning. Resultatet visar också på att kvinnorna får skapa sina egna möjligheter genom strategier såsom att använda olikheter till något positivt, satsa på språket eller omutbilda sig. Etableringen innebär en brytpunkt som kan innebära kompromisser men strategierna och framgångsfaktorer kan minska de negativa konsekvenserna.

Abstract [en]

This study examines immigrant women’s career paths and establishment in the Swedishlabour market. The study focuses on factors that facilitate and hinder the establishment andhow these factors affect the women’s career paths. The study is based on three interviews with highly educated women who have migrated to Sweden and managed to find employment here. The results have been analyzed using three different career theories: The Careership theory, Social Cognitive Career Theory and The theory of Circumscription and Compromise. The results show that the women meet various obstacles, including difficulties with the language and difficulties making use of the knowledge and experience they have from their home country. However, the women have strategies to handle the difficulties that facilitate their paths in to the labour market such as turning their differences into something positive, focusing on learning the language and reeducating themselves. Although the new labour market may result in compromises and challenges, the women’s strategies and success factors decrease the negative consequences.
