Does teachers in school sports give enough support to encourage long-term atlethes? (English)
Abstract [en]

Swedish sport organization is based on voluntary commitment and is striving to achieve long-termathletics. It has always been essential that the number of leaders are constantly being supplementedand that they are educated to meet the current needs. Sport schools are one of the primaly tools foreducating athletes in sports. Accordning to studies drop-outs have been common during and aftercompleted educations. They also show that athletes were often injured during training and that theinjury period were a major mental stress for the athletes. A high internal motivation proved to be animportant factor for achievement and long-term athletes. Teachers in school sports are the individualswho can primarily influence the environment that the students find themselves in which has beenshown to be a vital factor for the student's motivation. The purpose of the study was to investigate howteachers in school sports experience the educational conditions for the sport school athletes, theirstrategic work to support injured students, students with a reduced motivation and students that dropoutof special sport education. The results of five semi structured interviews with teachers in schoolsports have shown that support against the students in need of encouragement have majordeficiencies. The students need to manage themselves during the injury process and a clear plan forstudents who stop wanting to become a professional athlete does not exist. Knowledge of the factorswhich influence the motivation and performance climate varied amongst the teachers as well as theextent to which they related towards them. The result also shows that the ambition of the teachers inschool sports and the relation to further involvement in the sports movement is crucial to the extent towhich students who end their sports career choose to engage in the future.
