Abstract [en]

Introduction: Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most dominant, chronic degenerative joint disease, characterized by cartilage degradation of one or more joints that causes chronic pain and disability worldwide. Age related disorders like OA and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) are becoming more universal due to increasing length of human life span. There is a relationship between OA and T2DM whether hyperglycemia could be a signicant risk factor for development of OA. For the development of OA, the typical riskfactors include mechanical stress, aging, genetics, metabolic syndrome that creates degeneration of joints. Hormonal regulation and glucose metabolism play a signicant role for a healthy cartilage. However, patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) frequently suffer severe symptomatic joint problem. Indeed hyperglycemia and insulinemia may cause destruction of joint cartilage and speed up the development of OA. United States reports,47.3 percent patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) bear some form of musculoskeletal joint disorders.

Aims: The aim and objective of the study to develop a protocol for measuring the prevalenceof knee OA among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus who will receive treatment from DAB (Diabetic Association of Bangladesh) hospitals, Dhaka, Bangladesh.

Methodology: This study will be conducted at DAB hospitals, Dhaka, Bangladesh. This study uses a cross-sectional, quantitative study design. A pre - tested questionnaire will be used to collect data.
