Experiences to be a sibling of a child with cancer (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Around 300 000 children are diagnosed with cancer every year, which affects the entire family. The siblings experience a major change in their life situation as routines change and they get less attention. Siblings may need to become more involved in healthcare and receive increased support from the nurse.

Aim: To illustrate the sibling’s experience of living with a sister or brother who has been affected by cancer.

Method: A literature study where eight qualitative articles were reviewed and compiled after analysis inspired by Friberg (2007).

Results: The result was compiled in four categories: Reversal emotions towards

a cancer diagnosis, changed family life and its importance, siblings schooling and extracurricular activities, importance of support and understanding.

Conclusion: The literature study shows that siblings get overwhelming emotions and often end up in the background. Siblings are in need of support from both parents and the healthcare to relieve their suffering in this difficult situation.
