Abstract [sv]

Background: The prevalence of dementia is expected to increase in the future. To be able to offer and support activities that are perceived as meaningful research on the experiences of persons with dementia is important.

Aim: To describe meaningful activity for persons with mild to moderate dementia on basis of their own experiences.

Method: A literature study where the databases CINAHL, PsycINFO, MEDLINE, PubMed, SocINDEX, SCOPUS and Web of Science were searched. Twelve articles were analyzed with inspiration from Evans’ descriptive synthesis.

Results: The three themes presented in the results are can create a sense of coherence”, “reinforces identity and fulfills personal needs” and “prerequisites may promote or restrict the experience of meaningful activity".

Conclusion: Persons with dementia can, through various coping strategies, promote the experience of meaningful activities. The dementia disease tended not to affect their desire to be socially active or to contribute to their environment. Caregivers play a significant role in affirming and supporting the person with dementia’s resources in order to promote involvement in activities that are perceived as meaningful.
