Experiences of social pressure among parents in sports : A quantitative study about the economical and voluntarily pressure on parents in sport (English)
Abstract [en]

Sport for children is made possible through the participation of voluntary parents. However, this participation is somewhat badly reflected in the modern society, despite the fact that the organization of sport in Sweden would not be possible without it. This study aimed to investigate whether parents were experiencing social pressure related to money and time. Furthermore, the purpose was to examine if social pressure appeared to change over time or if it consisted while the children grew older. The study was based on a quantitative research through an internet-based survey, sent by e-mail to three local sports clubs and where parents responded to it. In total, the questionnaire was answered by 177 parents. The results indicated that one third of the parents experienced social pressure from their sports club. The major factor of social pressure appeared to be an experience of lack of time. Concluding, the study showed that the demands on voluntary parents in the clubs, were unreasonably high. Some parents indicated there was not enough time to participate as a voluntary, thus questioning future possibility of voluntary work in the area of sports for children.
