The effect of motivational-enhancing treatment and twelve-steptreatment : A literature study (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Alcohol is the substance that poses the greatest harm to both theindividual and society as compared to other substances. The nurse has a central rolein the work on preventing and nursing patients with alcohol use disorder. TheSwedish National Bord of Health and Welfare recommends motivational-enhancingtreatment as well as the twelve-step treatment as psychosocial treatments.

Aim: This study aimed to describe the effect of motivational-enhancing treatmentand the twelve-step.

Method: The literature study consists of nine studies with quantitative methods, where the results from each study have been reviewed, analysed and compiled. Thedatabases used when searching for studies were PsycINFO and Cinahl.

Results: Five of the studies that examined motivational-enhancing treatmentindicated a significant reduction of alcohol consumption in follow-up. One studyfound an increase in motivation in the group receiving motivational-enhancingtreatment. The studies which examined twelve-step treatment showed a greaterincrease in abstinence in the intervention group compared to the control group. Thesame studies also found that those who received more support from 12-stepcounsellors had had a more active involvement and an increased attendance rate. Thestudy also found a correlation between high involvement in 12-step meetings andabstinence.

Conclusion: The study showed that motivational-enhancing treatment can reducealcohol consumption but not increase abstinence, compared to twelve-step treatmentwhich can increase abstinence in interaction with attendance and a high level ofinvolvement.
