Women´s experiences of sexuality after gynecological cancer : A literature review (Swedish)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Title: Women´s experiences of sexuality after gynecological cancer – a literature review.

Background: Every year nearly 3000 women in Sweden suffer from a gynaecological cancer. That is, cancer which occur in the female genitals as well as the female reproductive system. These organs are closely related to the sense of femininity and sexuality. Furthermore, illness and treatment may affect women on both physical and mental levels.

Aim: The purpose of this study was to highlight women's experiences of their sexuality after treatment of gynecological cancer.

Method: A literature study based on ten qualitative studies was conducted.

Result: Women experienced several changes and difficulties associated with sexuality

post gynaecological cancer treatment. They described experiences such as changed view on self-perception and body image as well as challenges in their sex life. Moreover, findings showed that women perceived lack of sufficient information from health care professionals regarding physical and psychological changes associated with sexuality which may occur during and post treatment.

Conclusion: Increased knowledge about women’s experiences after gynecological cancer could support health care professionals in their care and support for women’s sexual recovery.
