Womens experiences of undergoing chemotherapy treatment for breast cancer : A literture study (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract

Background: In 2018, 2 088 849 people were affected by breast cancer worldwide, and in Sweden over the past 50 years, the incidence of breast cancer has increased significantly but mortality has decreased. Chemotherapy treatment is recommended for breast cancer under various criteria and usually the chemotherapy treatment is postoperatively adjuvant and in some cases neo-adjuvant.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to describe women's experiences of undergoing chemotherapy for breast cancer.

Method: A literature study where eight reviewed qualitative studies was compiled. Fribergs five-step model was used in the analysis.

Results: The analysis resulted in five categories with associated subcategories. The main categories where: to wait for the beginning of treatment, the consequences in everyday life, coping strategies, support and lack of support from the people around you and also thoughts of the future.

Conclusion: Women who are treated with chemotherapy for breast cancer undergo extensive suffering. Their suffering can be divided into three different types of suffering. It is possible for nurses to reduce the suffering of these women, but further research is needed in the subject to improve the care of these women.
