Being diagnosed and living with MS : a literature study (English)
Abstract [sv]

Nyckelord: Multipel skleros, upplevelser, litteraturstudie

Abstract [en]

Background: Multiple sclerosis causes a broad spectrum of symptoms on the affected and is the major cause of disabilities in young adults. The effects on the lives of those who are affected are extensive and increased knowledge and understanding about the disease is needed.

Purpose: To illuminate experiences of being diagnosed and living with MS.

Method: A literature study with eight qualitative empirical studies analyzed with inspiration from Fribergs five-step model.

Results: Being diagnosed with MS was a difficult experience and the healthcare often failed to provide the support they needed. MS changed the life of its victims in both negative and positive ways. Many had to give up parts of their life, but they also got a new perspective on life, with other priorities.

Conclusion: Being diagnosed and living with MS causes a great deal of suffering and the nurse has an important role in relieving the suffering of the affected. In order for this to be possible, it is important that the nurse confirms the patients suffering and provides individual support and information to each person.
