Abstract [en]

Grassroots and amateur movements are important for a cultural community. In Umeå, Sagateatern was the most important stage for these movements, and when it was closed down in 2016, there became a gap within the existing stage spaces in Umeå. The closure affected the whole cultural community in Umeå, but mostly the grassroots and amateur movements. The grassroots and amateur movements were dependent on the Sagateatern stage due to its qualities and pricing structure, and the other stages that were left after the closure could not meet the standards of the old stage.

At the same time there is an on-going debate around re-activating and re-using old buildings in cities instead of tearing them down and building new ones. This because old buildings contributes to the atmosphere and soul of the city with their history, and this is something that gets lost when old buildings are not preserved.

This master thesis has connected these two topics, the lack of stage space in Umeå and the preservation of old buildings, with an aim to create a stage for performance in an old building in the city centre of Umeå. To do this, research around existing buildings that needed a new purpose was carried out. Parallel to it, research around the old Sagateatern stage and the community’s need of a new stage was carried out. When the perimeters for the project were set through the research, the design project started with research and analyses of the chosen building’s structure and potentials. Three case studies were also examined to get further understanding of how similar projects had been carried out before. Departing from all the collected knowledge, the design phase started with different tests of design ideas, first on a sketch level and then moving forward with drawings of the plans and sections. All this leading to a complete project: A well-functioning stage for performance within an old building in the city centre of Umeå.
