Women's experience of living with endometriosis (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Endometriosis is a chronic illness that affects around 10% of the female population worldwide in their reproductive age. It can take a very long time before one gets the right diagnosis regardless of women’s severe pelvic pain and other symptoms. Endometriosis is affecting women’s quality of life and their life in general very negatively.

Aim: The aim of this study is to explore women’s experience of living with endometriosis.

Method: A qualitative literature study was done. Articles for this study were found on following databases: PubMED, Cinahl, Scopus and PsycInfo. Eleven qualitative studies have been examined and analysed. After these two processes the final three themes arose.

Findings: The result contains these three main categories: Long-term chronical pain, the consequences of having a chronic illness and the lack of knowledge in healthcare staff.

Conclusion: Women who suffer from edometriosis experience severe pain that affects their everyday life, relationships, work, intimate relationship and fertility, and the constant uncertainty they must live with because of the disease.
