Abstract [en]

With the aim of integrating apartments for elderly with the city to establish housing environments which allows an aging in place without the loss of social connection and a sense of participation in the city, the core strategy of this project, based on previous case studies, has been to combine apartments dedicated to elderly with a public function. In the case of this project, the public function is made out of a small scale public city district library. Within the project, the library is seen as one of few truly inclusive meeting places, a public space which preserves parts of the site for the surrounding neighbourhood to access. But it is also seen as a place for contemplation and discussion as well as a symbol for a life-long learning. Most importantly though, the library is treated as a bridge between the large society and the close environment, between the city and the secure housing, the public and the private, the group and the individual as it provides the area with a space for social gatherings, at the same time as it enrichens the close environment surrounding the elderly apartments.
