Abstract [en]

The Swedish government has subsidized BEV (Battery electric vehicle) for many years, mainly since the year 2009, to reduce the negative environmental effects that the transport sector produces. This study aims to examine the development of the Swedish BEV market for the time period year 2009 – 2019 and whether government policies have had an effect on BEV sales. The study also examined if the sales of BEV is potentially affected by socioeconomically factors, regional development of charging infrastructure and municipal type and size. The study is based only on secondary data which is analyzed with the statistical method of regression analysis. The result showed that higher levels of income and education affected BEV sales positively on a municipal basis up to the year 2018. The study also showed that the number of charging points had a positive effect on BEV sales on a county level up to the year 2018. The study concluded that sales of BEV has increased mainly since the middle of the year 2018 and that the subsidy program “Bonus Malus” might have contributed to the increased sales of BEV. Furthermore, sales of BEV have shifted slightly from larger municipalities to smaller for the years 2018 – March 2019 and higher levels of education still remains a positive factor for BEV sales on a municipal basis for the same time period.
