Intelligent automation of business processes : Organizational challenges and opportunities (English)
Abstract [en]

Organizations have for a long time been using IT to increase the effectiveness and productivity of their employees. Today, organizations are taking it one step further, and have begun using IT as a way of automating business processes where large amounts of information is being handled. With a rising ability to handle an increasing number of complex tasks, automation is likely to change the foundation of organizations, and modern-day work. However, assessing the impact that automation will have on an organization is difficult, and research in this field is scarce. The purpose of this study is to examine the organizational opportunities, and challenges, that emerges when information-based business processes are automated. We conducted a case study of the ongoing automation efforts at a large insurance company. The results show that the challenges an organization faces are mainly linked to organizational management, while the perceived opportunities are mainly connected to the daily operations. Based on this, we provide organizations with guidelines on how to handle the challenges and seize the opportunities.
