Abstract [en]

Finns visit Sweden to a greater extent than Swedes visit Finland. This travel pattern also holds true for the regional travel pattern between Österbotten and Västerbotten. This study examines if the distinctive travel habits of each population and the attitudes towards each other can explain the uneven travel pattern between the two regions.

Tourism between Österbotten and Västerbotten is a valuable source of income for both regions. In order to further develop the tourism routes between the regions, it’s important to examine their travel habits, motives and attitudes. Furthermore, this study will gather in depth data on size of travel groups, travel frequency, travel companionship and common destinations.

An mixed methods approach will be used in order to understand and explain the uneven travel patterns between both regions. Data is collected through an online survey published in both Österbotten and Västerbotten. The results show differences and similarities between how the populations of both regions tend to travel. These differences could support an explanation for the uneven travel patterns between the regions. The empirical data shows that the populations of both regions hold predjucice attitudes towards each other. However, this only affects travel patterns from Västerbotten to Österbotten negatively.
