The TV is included. An interview study with six Syrian immigrants about their use of media before, after and in connection with the move to Sweden (English)
Abstract [en]

This essay aims to explore how Syrian immigrants in Sweden perceived their media habits in Syria, how the media were used when they decided to move to Sweden and what kind of role media had for them when they settled in their new home country. The study also examines what functions media had in different places based on immigrants' own experiences and how the Syrians themselves experience the media as a part of meeting a new culture. To examine this in detail, a qualitative interview method was used in which six Syrian immigrants residing in Umeå were given the opportunity to share their experiences from Syria and their relocation story to Sweden. This was done with the media use in focus. The people were selected by the snowball method because the hypothesis was that the Syrian immigrants in the city hold together and know other Syrian people in the town with similar experiences. The study found that media use in Syria was mainly governed by the social situation and whether it was war or not. During the war, many of the interviewees used to keep themselves updated about the war in order to feel safe. Many also knew that the media were regulated by the state, but adapted to it and to the available media offering. In connection with the move to Sweden, the media was used to get in touch with people who could help them move from one country to another, but also to get information about Sweden and the Swedish culture as a way to prepare for the move. In Sweden, the Syrian interviewees chose two different strategies in the meeting with the Swedish culture. One strategy was to be able to integrate as quickly as possible into the Swedish society and the use of almost only Swedish media was a part of it. For the other group, it was more about wanting to move back to Syria after the war and this group mostly used media from the country of origin.
