Abstract [sv]

Abstract

Title: The school nurse´s role interacting with students with

mental illness

Background: Mental illness in children and adolescents is increasing and many factors are believed to cause this. Therefore it is important to discover mental illness early and school nurses play an important role in this work.

Aim: The aim of this study was to study aspects in the school nurse´s work in the interacting and guidance of children and adolescents with mental illness.

Method: A literature study where nine qualitative articles were analyzed.

Result: The nurses were well aware of the important role they were playing in working with children and adolescents and they took their work seriously. In the result five factors emerged that had an impact on the school nurse´s work: Relations, Cooperation, Obstacles in the work, Documentation and Knowledge. Good relations with pupils were pursued in order to carry out good nursing and cooperation with family and other professions was seen as another important factor. Obstacles in the work that emerged were of an organizational nature and documentation was seen as a challenge. Finally a need for knowledge regarding mental illness emerged.

Conclusion: School nurses consider their work with children and adolescents as meaningful and developing at the same time as they struggle with ethical challenges, a feeling of not doing enough and a need of increased knowledge and education, which demands national guidelines.
