Abstract [en]

Gender equality is the road forward: A metaphorical analysis of the term gender equality inpolitical speeches by Stefan Löfven (2012-2018)Per Andreas PerssonMaster thesis in gender studies, 2019Umeå Center for Gender Studies, Umeå UniversityThe aim of the study is to evaluate how rhetorically driven gender equality politics isexpressed and what function it fills. The study examines 25 public speeches held by the leaderof the Swedish Social Democratic Party and current Prime Minister Stefan Löfven. The thesismain question is to answer what type of metaphors Löfven is using in his speeches whenaddressing gender equality and how these metaphors can be understood using a feministspeech analysis. The study’s premise is that equality politics is rhetorically driven and thatthere has been a depoliticisation of the gender equality issue. A metaphoric and a diffractionanalysis has been carried out to answer the questions. The result reveals that the mostcommon metaphors follow a pattern in the Social Democratic myth formation where thepeople are seen as a family and where the country is to be built. Conflict oriented metaphorsare also common, as well as metaphors indicating that we are on a journey together and thatthere are obstacles along the road hindering the achievement of gender equality. It can beargued that gender equality politics as a rhetorically driven theme is present in Löfven’sspeeches where gender equality is spoken about in a certain way connected to other politicalissues. The analysis also points towards a lack of concretisation of the gender equality issue, which is an example of how it is being depoliticised. In the study the term catachresis is beingused meaning that metaphors can both hide as well as uncover certain aspects of a particularelement. In the speeches the word freedom is connected to women’s opportunities in thelabour market, hiding the aspect that the labour market is driven by the politics ofneoliberalism affecting the whole society with its demands for efficiency and adaptation.
