Abstract [en]

The aim of this study has been to critically analyse discourses on gender and sexuality in written material produced by the Swedish Migration Board and in interviews with staff at the administrative authority, drawing on Norman Fairclough’s three-dimensional model as well as feminist and postcolonial theory. The written material is used frequently in assessments where asylum-seekers claim risk of persecution based on gender or sexuality. I have identified three discursive themes; objective identities, self-image as deviant and victim of culture and tradition. Other than the discursive themes, the written material and the interviews showed a paradox of subjective truth expressing the subjective element of self-image and as a result of this the difficulties in evaluating identities in others.
