Women’s experience of living with breast cancer – A literature study (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women and around 9000 suffer from it every year in Sweden. Undergoing treatment for breast cancer is not just a physical challenge but an emotional and mental one as well.

Aim: The aim of this literature study is to describe women’s experiences of living with breast cancer.

Method: A literature study was carried out. Eight empirical studies with qualitative methods were chosen and analysed according to Friberg’s five stage model.

Result: The results were collected into four categories as follows: getting a breast cancer diagnosis, a changed body, an inner journey and support or lack of support.

Conclusion: Living with breast cancer caused a distress that had a physical as well as a mental aspect. Nurses should be aware of the need to support women who are going through breast cancer treatment, in order to mitigate the distress and give a personalised care stemming from each individual’s needs. Support from those nearest to the women was found to be an important part of their recovery during and after treatment for breast cancer.
