Abstract [sv]

The purpose of this study wa to investigate perceptions and experiences among special educational needs coordinators (SENCos) and teachers in preschool class and year 1 of prevention, early interventions and the role of the SENCo. Qualitative interviews with 8 people was conducted: four SENCos, two teachers in preschool class and two teachers in year 1. The findings showed that the preventive work takes place primarily in the regular teaching. It is difficult for SENCos to keep up with work in the preschool class, despite their awareness of the importance of early intervention. The work is primarily consisting of screenings of students and tutoring of the teachers. In preschool class the role of SENCos is focused on students groups, while in year 1 the role will be more focused on the individual to help the students  to achieve the curriculum goals. SENCos are involved in the development of the educational work in schools. Their knowledge is useful for pedagogical development.
