Vetenskapliga ändpunkter och gränsland: metodologiska spörsmål i relation till en studie om studie- och yrkesvägledning

This article emanates from a postgraduate course, and discusses methodological issues related to the research subject Pedagogical Work and to my study, where career development of young unemployed adults are analysed, which is utilized illustratively. The results are based on interviews with 52 women and men, 25-29 of age, from three Swedish municipalities with varying socio-economic conditions, and focus these individuals’ encounters with career guidance services in educational settings. Both obstructive and supportive aspects of these meetings are expressed, but negative comments on perceived insensitivity to the individuals’ needs dominate. Hence guidance is regarded irrelevant as reinforcement of ones career development. However it is also concluded from the respondents’ narratives that career counsellors may (re-) formulate available options. The respondents use avoidance strategies to reach their goals, and meet counsellors’ intervention with pretended agreement. Finally, I return to consider varying bases of research, and conclude my own approach to be rather critical and dialectic.
