The paper recollects the experiments by Carl Sandstedt on tissue changes during orthodontic tooth movement that were published in 1904-05. Many of the major tissue changes at a light microscopic level that are described in orthodontic textbooks of today, such the interplay between resorptive and appositonal processes, the development of so called hyaline zones, and root reosprtion, were demonstrated by Sandstedt in his report. His observations and thoughts heavily subsequent researchers publishing studies on tissue changes during tooth movement.
