Abstract [en]

Recent clinical studies suggest that a daily intake of 4-5 grams of xylitol is needed to benefit from the anti-caries-properties of xylitol. Taken together, 1) scientific, ii) economic, iii) compliance, and iv) ethical aspects strongly suggests that highly concentrated chewing gums or tablets should be recommended 3 times a day after a meal in order to facilitate and accomplish the advocated regimen. Thus 5-minute chewing of 2 pieces in the morning, 2 pieces after lunch and 2 pieces in the evening can currently be regarded as an optimum adjunct to daily exposure of fluoride in patients at risk for caries development.
