This paper explores the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in the development of systems meant to provide support for people with mental health issues. Mental health issues are a global concern, and there is a significant need for effective inventions to address them. The thesis reviews current literature on mental health and AI technology, such as machine learning, mobile apps, and wearable devices, analyzing the ways in which such technology can be leveraged in the detection, prevention and treatment of mental health issues. The study focuses on interviewing experts in the field involved in projects that incorporates AI in their development of interactive digital services targeted towards mental health issues. It then highlights the ability of AI technology to support experts in the prevention of mental illness. This paper also underlines the importance of addressing challenges including ensuring user safety and maintaining the relevance of AI technologies in the face of rapidly evolving trends. The main purpose of this thesis is to create a better understanding for the challenges that developers are facing while implementing AI for this purpose, and to contribute to bridging the gap between the prospects of advanced technology and the actual implementation of such.
