Journalism and artificial intelligence – a new relationship in motion : A qualitative interview study on working journalists' opinions on AI. (English)
Abstract [en]

Being a journalist in a constantly evolving society can be both rewarding and challenging. The profession has evolved and has become more digitalized over time, together with our society as a whole. The latest technological breakthrough is spelled artificial intelligence or AI for short and is shaking the whole world at this moment. It is predicted that the rise of AI could be the reason for our next industrial revolution. Finding interest in both journalism and AI, this study explores the current and future relationship between the two. In order to explore this we’ve interviewed working journalists in a larger town on their thoughts, fears and predictions about AI. The following three research questions are what this study answers on.

- To what extent do working journalists believe that journalistic work will be changed by AI? - What potential benefits do working journalists see in AI for journalism? - What potential disadvantages do working journalists see with AI in journalism?

We’ve used a qualitative interviewing method to conduct the study to capture the journalists opinions on the subject. The theoretical framework consists of two of Ulrich Beck's theories on reflexive modernity as well as Bruno Latour's actor network theory. These theories contribute to explore and problematize our chosen journalists' thoughts and concerns.

Our conclusion of the study can confirm the fact that there is a new and moving relationship between AI and journalism, that working journalists today can find both positive and negative aspects of the new technology. On one hand there is an aspect of anxiety about the future and where AI will end up. On the other hand, they overall welcome AI into the industry and see it as a way to streamline journalistic labor, saving time and money that actually could help improve journalism as a whole.
