Abstract [en]

This article aims to increase knowledge of ways to counter school absen-teeism and early school leaving. It analyses stories of youths who eitherattended or probably would be referred to a Swedish remedial programbecause of failure to complete compulsory education. Histories of schoolabsenteeism were frequent in both groups. Most participating studentsreported that a holistic approach, individually adapted support, and arespectful socio-emotional environment helped them to regain self-esteemand school motivation. The findings indicate essential factors for preven-tion of school absenteeism and early school leaving.
