Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

During the last few years, stress-related diseases, including burnout, have increased in Sweden. Burnout has several negative effects on those afflicted and perceived stigma of burnout have been related to help-seeking attitudes and behaviors. The aim of this study was therefore to examine the perceived stigma of burnout in Sweden and to explore whether there are differences in perceived stigma between demographic groups. The aim was also to examine whether there are relationships between perceived stigma of burnout and level of self reported burnout, and attitude towards help-seeking. To examine this, the self-report instruments Burnout Stigma Inventory (BSI) and Shirom-Melamed Burnout Measure-12 (SMBM-12) were used in a web survey, including some background questions. Out of the 247 participants, the majority were highly educated women. One-way analysis of variance, independent t-test and Pearson’s correlation was used to calculate the results. The results showed that the participants had a relatively low degree of perceived stigma of burnout. There was a significant difference in perceived stigma between the youngest and the oldest age group, where the youngest group believed that the public had more stigmatizing perceptions about burnout than the oldest group. Level of self rated burnout and attitude towards help-seeking had no significant correlation with perceived stigma of burnout. The findings from the present study can guide future research, which we recommend should include a more heterogeneous sample as well as to examine other aspects of stigma, too.
