Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

District nurses’ experiences of working at a primary healthcare center in Västernorrland during the covid-19 pandemic

-         A qualitative interview study

Abstract

Background: During the Covid-19 pandemic there was a change in priority where planned visits were postponed and cancelled in favor of acute and emergency care. Patients’ ways of seeking health care changed. There was an increase in digital contacts with the health care system. New routines, guidelines and ways of working were invented, and old hierarchies were put to side. Working with personal protective equipment (PPE) was time consuming, heavy and uncomfortable. There was a lack of PPE and confusion about which PPE gave the right protection. Nurses’ work situation was characterized by stress and uncertainty, which affected their psychological wellbeing. Support from the leadership was crucial. Uncertainty about the infection state in patients and people in general had a negative effect on nurses. Nurses showed a great ability to lead the work during the pandemic and had an important role in care development.

Motive: There are only a few studies about district nurses in primary healthcare during the pandemic in Sweden and knowledge about the district nurses’ experiences is lacking. No previous study has investigated experiences of district nurses in Västernorrland.

Aim: To describe district nurses’ experiences of working in a primary healthcare center during the covid-19 pandemic.

Methods: Qualitative content analysis through semi-structural interviews. Interviews were conducted with 9 district nurses and nurses at primary healthcare centers in Region Västernorrland during fall 2023.

Result: One main category was identified: From chaos to safety. Three categories with a total of eight subcategories emerged. Categories: Feeling anxious and unsafe, Readjustment with new ways of working, Be more prepared for the future.

Conclusion: The results correspond to previous studies about nurses’ experiences during the covid-19 pandemic. This study adds light to the lived experiences of district nurses and brings an insight in the work in primary health care centers in Västernorrland. These experiences can be used in planning for coming pandemics.
