Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background In Home and Consumer Studies (HCS), health should be taught from a holistic perspective, encompassing physical, mental and social aspects around various contents. Teachers in HCS are granted freedom in shaping health education, making their reasoning crucial for the outcome of the education.

Objective The aim of this study was to explore how teachers in HCS reason about and experience health education from a holistic perspective.

Method(s) The study was conducted through a qualitative study with semi-structured interviews. Thematic analysis was conducted on the interview data.

Results In health education, teachers primarily focused on physical health, while social health often fell outside of the health concept. Teachers identified opportunities to enhance students’ knowledge about food and health. The content was based on the teachers’ interpretations of policy documents. Reasoning surrounding mental health was shown in connection to education about physical health and posed as a challenge for teachers.

Conclusion In order to ensure that all health aspects are highlighted, increased understanding is needed to see how different health content is prioritized against each other and which tools teachers’ in HCS must gain to make the social and psychological aspects of health available to students
