Psykoterapi som inte håller rätt spår benämns i forskning som ”terapeutisk drift”. Den terapeutiska driften beskrivs uppstå när terapeuter inte lyckas fullt ut med att leverera evidensbaserad behandling. Det har påvisats att egenskaper hos terapeuten påverkar behandlingsinnehållet och risken för terapeutisk drift. Nio terapeutegenskaper korrelerar till terapeutisk drift; terapeutkunskap, teoretisk inriktning, attityder till forskning, kritiskt tänkande, klinisk erfarenhet, terapeutångest, terapeutens ålder, terapeutens personlighetsdrag och kulturell kompetens. Syftet med studien är att få en fördjupad förståelse för KBT-terapeuters uppfattning om terapeutegenskaper och hur terapeutegenskaperna upplevs påverka behandlingsinnehåll och styrning i psykoterapi. De personer som är med i studien är socionomer och legitimerade psykoterapeuter med KBT-inriktning. Studien är en kvalitativ studie där djupintervjuer har genomförts med fyra intervjupersoner och där resultat påvisar en upplevelse att terapeutegenskaper påverkar behandling och styrning av terapi. I studien framkom bland annat ett eklektiskt arbetssätt, rädsla hos terapeuten att behandling ska påverka patienten negativt och en försiktighet i att pressa patienten till att göra vissa delar i behandlingen för att alliansen inte ska bli försämrad. Egenskaper hos patienten som till exempel samsjuklighet gör att terapeutegenskaper aktiveras och att man därför ibland modifierar behandling och utesluter vissa moment i behandlingen. Ytterligare forskning behövs vad gäller terapeutegenskapernas samverkan, medvetenheten hos terapeuter vad gäller sina terapeutegenskaper, terapeutens hälsa som en faktor till terapeutisk drift, personlighetens påverkan, känslornas betydelse samt sambandet vad gäller terapeutisk allians i förhållande till terapeutisk drift från evidensbaserad metod. 

Psychotherapy that does not stay on track is referred to in research as “therapeutic drift”. The therapist drift is described as occurring when psychotherapists do not fully succeed in delivering evidence-based treatment. It has been shown that characteristics of the therapist influence the treatment content and the risk of therapeutic drift. Nine therapist characteristics correlate to therapist drift: therapist knowledge, theoretical orientation, attitudes to research, critical thinking, clinical experience, therapist anxiety, the therapist´s age, the therapist´s personality traits and culture competence. The purpose of the study is to highlight CBT-therapist´s view of therapist characteristics and how they affect the treatment content and management in psychotherapy. The people involved in the study are sociologists and licensed psychotherapists with CBT- orientation. The study is a qualitative study where in-depth interviews have been conducted with four interviewees and where results demonstrate that therapist characteristics influence treatment ang management of therapy and which factors activate therapist characteristics. The study revealed, among other things, an eclectic way of working, fear that treatment will affect the patient negatively and a caution in pressuring the patient to do certain parts of the treatment so that the alliance does not deteriorate. Characteristics of the patient such as comorbidity mean that therapist´s characteristics are activated and that therefore treatment is sometimes modified, and certain aspects of the treatment are excluded. Fear that treatment will affect the patient negatively or the alliance will deteriorate emerged as factors for therapist drive. Further research is needed regarding the interaction of therapist characteristics, the awareness of therapists regarding their therapist characteristics, the therapist´s health as a factor in therapeutic operation, the influence of personality, the importance of emotions and the connection in terms of therapeutic alliance in relation to therapeutic operation from an evidence-based method.
