ADULTS´ ATTITUDES TOWARDS CARBOHYDRATES : - a quantitative survey study (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background Carbohydrates can provide energy to all the cells in the body as well as various nutrients that humans need. Diets, social media, education level, age and gender can all be factors that influence the choice to eat or avoid carbohydrates, or partially exclude them. The dietitian may need to be more accessible in society on behalf of the individual. Objective The aim of this study is to investigate adults’ attitudes towards carbohydrates. Method A quantitative method, using a web survey, has been employed to collect data. The survey was distributed on the authors' own Facebook pages. Data has been analyzed by Chi2 tests and Fischer’s Exact tests. Results The analysis showed that there were no differences between men and women regarding their attitudes towards carbohydrates. Information acquisition differed to some extent depending on education. Younger women experienced to be more affected by social media than other groups examined in this study. Conclusion Age and gender play a role in how messages in social media affect the individual. Understanding how science works and that scientific results often are skewed in the media should be taught.
