The co-creative algorithm : A qualitative study on the significance of generative tools in graphic design (English)
Abstract [en]

This study examines the various application areas of generative AI in graphic design to understand its potential and limitations. Through qualitative interviews with professionals in graphic design, we garnered valuable perspectives that provided an understanding of generative AI's role in the design process. Utilizing the double diamond model for analysis highlighted the importance of generative AI in the solution phase of the design process. Generative AI proved valuable for workflows, idea generation, creative collaboration, visualization, and exploration of new design paths. Despite these advantages, limitations with generative AI were identified, especially in the problem area of the design process where human interaction and understanding are crucial. The research shows that human creativity and adaptability remain irreplaceable, as generative AI occasionally falls short in meeting designers' expectations or dealing with complex external factors like customer interactions and overall design goals. The conclusion emphasizes the importance of integrating generative AI as a supporting tool rather than replacing human creativity in graphic design.
