Abstract [sv]

Psykologstudenter befinner sig i en kontext där de regelbundet bedöms och betygssätts vilket kan väcka skam och stärka perfektionistiska drag som i sin tur kan påverka studenter i terapeutrollen. Denna tvärsnittsstudie undersökte följande hypoteser: (1) Det finns samband mellan psykologstudenters skambenägenhet, skuldbenägenhet, stolthet och perfektionism; (2) Skambenägenhet, skuldbenägenhet och stolthet predicerar perfektionism olika; och (3) Skambenägenhet, skuldbenägenhet och stolthet predicerar perfektionistisk strävan (PS) och perfektionistisk oro (PO) olika. I studien deltog 108 psykologstudenter. Data samlades in med självskattningsinstrument i en digital enkät. Korrelationsanalyser visade att perfektionism var starkt positivt korrelerat med skambenägenhet; svagt positivt korrelerat med skuldbenägenhet; ej korrelerat med stolthet. Multipel linjär regression visade att högre skambenägenhet var associerat med högre grad av perfektionism, PS samt PO även vid kontroll för skuldbenägenhet och stolthet. Skam och perfektionism kan hjälpa psykologstudenter att använda sin oro över att misslyckas till att bli medveten om vad som krävs för att lyckas och att sträva efter att bli bättre i sin yrkesroll, men kan även bidra till en rigid negativ självbild och undvikandebeteenden, vilket kan hindra inlärning. Det kan vara bra att arbeta med detta redan under psykologprogrammet, exempelvis genom reflektion kring skam och perfektionism utifrån studentens egen terapeutroll.

Abstract [en]

Psychology students exist in a context where they are regularly evaluated and graded, which can evoke shame and strengthen perfectionistic tendencies and can in turn affect the studentsin their therapist role. This cross-sectional study examined the following hypotheses: (1) There are correlations between psychology students’ shame-proneness, guilt-proneness, pride and perfectionism; (2) Shame-proneness, guilt-proneness and pride predict perfectionism differently; and (3) Shame-proneness, guilt-proneness and pride predict perfectionistic strivings (PS) and perfectionistic concerns (PO) differently. A sample of 108 psychology students participated in the study. Data was collected using self-report questionnaires in a digital survey. Correlation analyses showed a strong positive correlation between perfectionism and shame-proneness; a weak positive correlation with guilt-proneness; a non-correlation with pride. Multiple linear regression showed that higher shame-proneness was associated with higher degrees of perfectionism, PS and PO even when controlling for guilt-proneness and pride. Shame and perfectionism can help psychology students use their concern over mistakes to become aware of what it takes to succeed and to strive to improve in their professional role, but can also contribute to a rigid negative self-image and avoidance behaviour, which can hinder learning. It might be good to work on this during the psychology program, for example through reflection on shame and perfectionism in the student’s own therapist role.
