How Shame, Guilt, and Religiosity Relate to Well-Being in a Limited Swedish Context

Abstract [en]

Sweden is generally considered secular, but has recently seen a growth in both religious plurality and affiliation. This study investigated the relation between religiosity, guilt, shame and subjective well-being in a Swedish context. A cross-sectional self-report study of a convenience sample of participants in Sweden (n = 49) revealed no significant linear relationship of religiosity and subjective well-being. A significant positive relationship was found between negative behavior evaluation and religiosity. Subjective well-being was negatively correlated with the withdrawal aspects of shame. The evidence presented shows that both dimensions of guilt proneness are correlated with proneness to negative self evaluating shame. Further explorations of the intricacies of guilt and shame in this context are warranted, as well as investigation of a potential curvilinear relationship between religion and subjective well-being.
