Abstract [en]

The population ages, the immigration to Sweden and mobility increases, therefore the need for cemeteries gets affected. Land for cemeteries must be secured because death is inescapable and there must be enough place for individuals to have their final rest. The Swedish funeral service is unique. We have distinct laws according to cemeteries and two organizations are responsible for the cemeteries in Sweden. However, planning for the dead has been neglected, even if it is an important place in a vibrant community. Because of the fact there are geographical, functional and emotional connections to the cemeteries. Why should we plan for the dead when the dead are dead?

This thesis aims to carry out an estimation of the need of land for cemeteries on a national level in Sweden and additionally visualize the planning for the dead and its relevance. The method to achieve the aim of the study was to process the empirical material in the software ArcGIS Pro. Therefore, the method is based on a few variables that have been considered to influence the need of land for cemeteries. The result shows that there is possibly a lack of space at several cemeteries in the future, mainly in the three biggest cities (Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmö) but also in other larger cities. However, the result says nothing about the amount of surface available for burying the deceased, which is left to further research.
