Many students cancel their studies in adult education and a lack of knowledge in adult pedagogics makes it difficult to support students with neuropsychiatric disability and a need for extra support in class. The need for support measures is often discovered late or not at all which further results in school failures. The purpose of this study is to describe and analyze counselors' work in adult education and how they help students in need of extra support. The experience of eight meritorious counselors in the northern part of Sweden has been raised using semi-structured interviews. Through a thematic analysis,they show that relationship building, earlier school failure and a structured workplace are important factors in discovering the need for extra support. The need for an awareness of colleagues’ competencies and who is responsible for what are two things that are discussed in this study. Further research is needed to be done from the students’ perspective for further knowledge and points of view from both sides and whether the result from this study is consistent with the students’ experiences.

Många elever avbryter sina studier inom den kommunala vuxen utbildningen och brist på kunskap inom vuxenpedagogik försvårar arbetet med att stötta elever med neuropsykiatrisk funktionsnedsättning med behov av extra anpassning. Behovet av stödåtgärder upptäcks oftast försent eller inte alls vilket resulterar i ytterligare skolmisslyckanden. Syftet med den här studien är att beskriva och analysera studie- och yrkesvägledares arbete inom vuxenutbildningen och hur de stöttar elever med behov av extra anpassning. Erfarenheter från åtta meriterade studie- och yrkesvägledare inom övre Norrland har lyfts med hjälp av semistrukturerade intervjuer. Genom en tematisk innehållsanalys visar de att relationsbyggande, tidigare skolmisslyckande och struktur inom verksamheten är betydande faktorer när det kommer till att upptäcka och implementera extra anpassningar. Behovet av en medvetenhet om kollegornas kompetenser och vem som ansvarar för vad är två saker som diskuteras under denna studie. Vidare forskning behövs studeras utifrån elevernas perspektiv för att få kunskap samt synvinklar från båda sidorna och om det resultat som framkommit i detta examensarbete överensstämmer med elevernas erfarenheter.
