This study investigates the impact of social norms on sustainable opinions at Umeå university.Despite prior evidence supporting the effectiveness of social norms and nudging, theirintegration into Sweden’s public sustainability policies has been limited. The aim of this studyis therefore to assess the effects of social norms on sustainable opinions and to come up withconcrete policy proposals. Employing a double survey involving 364 participants, differingonly in one sentence with a specific social norm in one of the surveys. The findings wereinconclusive and occasionally contradictory to theoretical expectations, leading to no concretepolicy recommendations. Given the inconclusive results, this paper recommends three followup studies designed to get better answers, and to better solve the purpose of being able to informfuture policy development.
