Risks and Opportunities of AI in the School Environement : Is generative AI a threat to secondary school? (English)
Abstract [en]

Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) in education has been a hot topic since the release of ChatGPT in late 2022. Schools worldwide have had to adapt to the use of the new technology because of the fear of their students using it to cheat. The Swedish authority, Skolverket, has released guidelines to help schools manage the use of generative AI. The guidelines include eliminating the use of graded essays, unless the teacher can ensure it was written without the use of generative AI. Opinions surrounding AI and especially the use of generative AI in schools are divided because of the challenges and opportunities it presents. This includes adapting learning to fit each student and supporting teachers in their work. However, it also means students are able to use generative AI for cheating, which currently is nearly impossible to prove as the traditional tools used for detecting plagiarism cannot detect AI-generated text. Multiple studies point to having a clear set of rules surrounding the use of generative AI, as well as teachers' knowledge and competence surrounding AI, as two of the most important aspects of a successful implementation of the technology in schools. In this paper we explore how generative AI is used at Swedish high schools today and its effect on student learning by answering the questions: What do teachers think of the use of generative AI in schools? How have they adapted their teaching and what measures have they taken? What consequences can be seen as a result of this technology?
